Hello, everyone - the school year is drawing to a close. It's time to think about summer!
Homeschooling families do many different things to schedule their year. Some use the public school calendar, which is an easy way to schedule school days and vacation days.
Some "school" year round, taking breaks as needed, or on a regular rotation (i.e. six weeks on, one week off, or four days a week school with three day weekends).
I like to do a kind of "extended" schedule, focusing on field trips and experiential learning during the summer, while being more structured come September. This gives me the flexibility of taking longer vacations during the "school year," because I already have some days logged from the summer, but also gives us a different focus for a few months, to give our brains a break! I also find it easier to do special trips and things in the summer, without having to worry about the weather as much.
We are planning a couple of trips this summer, one to Lake George overnight, and one to visit my family in Pennsylvania for a week. My 9 year old also has sleep-away camp for a week, and we have Vacation Bible School for another week.
What are your summer plans?
Ok, I'm finally going to comment! :) Robin is the computer/techno part of our friendship!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Heather. I have six children from age 14 down to 3. We are in the final lessons of our school year now and then we kick into high gear with a very busy summer this year! Each year we do "Dad days" with the kids and my oldest child (son) will be going with Dad next week to an overnight trip to Bromley, VA for some alpine slide and high action fun. He has no idea yet! My oldest daughter will have her day in the fall this year, as she'll go to a dinner theater show of "Fiddler on the Roof". We've never done big Dad days like this but wanted to bless the older kids as they are such a help in the family.
We'll celebrate Grandpa's 68th birthday this coming week, early July brings a Dr's appt for my mom and then an allergy testing appt for my 6 yr. old daughter, go camping in Maine for a week in July,(our very first family tent camping adventure!) be part of our church's VBS meeting, and our first support meeting with HVHE when we get back, try to fit in the 4 youngest kids' Dad days (one wants to ride over the Hudson, one wants to go hiking at Fawnstock Park, one wants to do everything and the little guy has no idea yet!).
What else? A week of VBS, (and all the prep that goes with getting it together until then), one child's August birthday, my August Birthday and the County Fair. Oh, and as many swimming days with our very generous pool sharing friends! Busy summer...my brain is already in September!
